Central lecture Research Integrity for starting PhD researchers

Background

The research at KU Leuven should meet the highest standards and correct scientific behaviour is the norm at KU Leuven. From that perspective, a positive attitude towards reflection, alertness and awareness of responsible conduct in research is important. This lecture will empower starting PhD researchers to understand the difference between what is and is not acceptable, and prevent them from making mistakes they would later regret because of the adverse consequences for others, for science and for their own career.

This lecture is compulsory for all new doctoral researchers (registration for year 1 of the doctoral programme). This lecture is intended for doctoral researchers of KU Leuven, but also the supervisors of the doctoral researcher (and other researchers of KU Leuven (postdocs, ZAP,…)) are very welcome to attend the lecture.

Topics discussed during the lecture:

  • Introduction to Research Integrity and Misconduct
  • Research Data Management
  • Plagiarism
  • GenAI - Generative Artificial Intelligence
  • Copyright
  • Conflict of Interest
  • Publication and Authorship
  • Commission for Research Integrity (CRI)

Didactical team of the lecture:

  • prof. Kris Dierickx
  • prof. Annemie Geeraerd Ameryckx — prof. Giovanni Samaey
  • prof. Katelijn Vandorpe — prof. Jozefien Vanherpe
  • prof. Ben Van Calster

FAQ

I'm not able to attend the lecture within the first year of my PhD programme.

Doctoral researchers who cannot attend the lecture during year 1 of their doctoral programme, for example because of a long stay abroad, can attend the lecture during the following academic year. This has to be confirmed by the supervisor (see confirmation letter).

The milestone 'Seminar scientific integrity' is not set in my KU Loket 'PhD Progress'.

Please allow a month for the processing of the attendance list. In addition, finally, for researchers whose PhD project is not yet entered in KU Loket 'PhD Progress' at the time of registration processing, the milestone date cannot be added automatically. Please contact us (Karine Aert) as soon as your PhD project is available in KU Loket so the milestone can be set manually.

I have attended the lecture. Can I get a certificate?

You will automatically receive the certificate by email around the same time the milestone is set in your PhD progress. Please note this email will be sent to your KU Leuven staff address (thus not your student e-mail). You can also find a copy of the certificate in your staff training overview in KU Loket (Staff training -> Courses and registration -> My training history).

I have followed a similar course during my master studies at KU Leuven. Can I get an exemption?

PhD researchers who have followed one of the KU Leuven master courses below are exempted from this central lecture:

  • 'Ethiek en recht in het biomedisch onderzoek' (B-KUL-EO2N9A)
  • 'Ethics and Law in Biomedical Research' (B-KUL-E07U9A)
